Teaching aims
Students will be able to know the brief account of Joseph Haydn’s life and develop their reading abilities by skimming and scanning.
Students can guess and master the meaning of the key words in the passage according to the context.

Teaching procedures
Step 1: Warming-up
1. Greetings.
2. Guide students to enjoy pieces of music from Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven and let the students listen and appreciate, then ask them:
1) What do you think about these pieces?
2) Who is your favorite musician? And who is your favorite composer?
Ask students to answer the question then lead in the topic today.
Step 2: Pre-reading
Give students a brief introduction of the musician Joseph Haydn and ask students to look at the title of the passage to predict the main idea of it.
Step 3: While-reading
1. Extensive reading
Read the passage for students and ask them to check the main idea of the reading passage within 2 minutes. Meanwhile they need to circle the words they can’t understand and guess the meaning according to the context.
Then invite one student to write the answer on the blackboard and get the meaning of the key word on the blackboard.
a. orchestra: a group of instrumentalists, especially one combining string, woodwind, brass, and percussion sections and playing classical music for example, Shanghai Rainbow Chamber Orchestra, which is popular among the young people.
b. symphony: a long piece of music that is usually in four large separate sections and that is performed by an orchestra, for example, 12 “London Symphonies”-the representative work of Haydn.
2. Intensive reading
Scan the passage and ask students to finish the table and answer the questions on the screen:
Q1: What did he do after studying music in Vienna?
Q2: When did he move to London and how was his life there?
5mins later, invite check the answer together.
Step 4: Post-reading
Ask students to describe their favorite musicians and what they have learned from them. 10 minutes are given for discussion. Then invite some groups to share and explain.
Step 5: Summary and Homework
Summary: invite a student to summarize today’s lesson. Ask students to cultivate the taste of appreciating the music.
Homework: ask students to design a poster of their favorite musician.

提升学生英语阅读兴趣是十分重要的,我会从一下方面着手:
1.应该尽量多地为学生创造英语阅读的机会及环境。
2.应注意在选择阅读材料时要选择比学生的程度稍微容易的文章来给学生阅读,增强他们对阅读的信心,从而培养他们阅读兴趣。
3.可通过举办阅读大赛等课外活动的方式培养和提高学生的阅读兴趣。
总而言之,兴趣是最好的老师,我们要努力做到让学生喜欢阅读,乐于阅读。

空闲时间我经常做运动,看电影,或跟朋友出去玩儿。我不能每天都去健身房或者电影院,但是我每天必做的事情是读书。
我热爱读书,书像是我的忠实朋友也是人进步的阶梯,运动强壮了我的身体,读书丰富了我的精神。我会利用一半的周末时间读书,即使经过漫长的一天的疲惫工作,我也会至少花半小时时间读书。
之所以选择读书,是因为我可以利用空闲时间在书中遨游世界上任何一个地方,从书中看到我的世界之外的生动的图景。
