At the beach
Teaching aims
Students can understand the main idea of the listening material and further consolidate the words such as “beach” and “sea”, and key sentence pattern such as “Is Peter doing his homework?”.
Students can enhance their listening ability such as listening for the gist and for detailed information, and predicting abilities through activities.
Students will talk about what they did during the holiday with their friends freely and actively.
Students can foster the love for life and the awareness of protecting the nature and living environment.

Teaching procedures
Step 1: Warming-up
1. Greet students as usual.
2. Enjoy a song together and ask them what the song is about. The song goes like this:
Na na na na na na na na na,
It is a day for fun and play.
Go go go go go go hand in hand,
Wake up baby no more on the bed.
Do remember it’s a holiday,
Day for play and for joy all the way.
There’s nothing but a holiday,
No school and no teacher.
Ask students to answer the question. Then ask them to turn the textbook and learn more about the holiday and lead them into the topic.
Step 2: Pre-listening
Draw some stick figures about the words “sea” and “beach”. Then ask students to predict the main idea of the listening material according to the stick figures and key words. Then invite some volunteers to share their ideas.
Step 3: While-listening
1. Extensive listening
Read the passage for students and ask them to find the main idea of the listening material. And invite one student to write the answer on the blackboard. Then ask them to check their predictions are true or false by themselves.
2. Intensive listening
Play the tape again and ask students to fill in the chart on the blackboard in 5 minutes. Then invite some students to share the answers and check together by asking questions, such as “Is Peter doing his homework?” or “Is Paul swimming in the sea?”. Write the sentence down on the blackboard and further explain the sentence pattern.
3. Ask students to read after the tape to imitate the intonation and pronunciation, especially the general questions.
Step 4: Post-listening
Play a memory game. First, show some pictures on the screen. Ask students to make them in order according to the listening material and then retell the story in pair work. 8 minutes will be given. Invites some groups to share their performance in front and praise the students with a strong memory.
Step 5: Summary and Homework
Summary: invite a student to be a little teacher and summarize today’s lesson. Ask students to enjoy beautiful things and colorful life on holiday. And remind them to protect the nature and environment if they go out for a trip.
Homework: ask students to bring a photo taken on holiday and share it in class.

本节课的重点是能够在语境下掌握单词和句型,并且能够对听力材料的大意有所把握。难点是培养学生热爱生活,保护大自然和生活环境的意识。为了解决重点,突破难点,我将自主听力和小组活动相结合,通过老师讲解并举例,使学生更好的理解文本,并达到情感目标的实现。

In this class, in order to attract students’ interest, I think I have designed every step ingeniously. 听力教学模式在近年来受到越来越多的关注。听力教学主要有一下三种教学模式:
第一种是自下而上的方法,学生从声音到单词、短语、句子进而整个语篇的理解; 第二种是自上而下的方法,从听力材料的背景信息出发到主要内容,最后是细节;这两种教学模式固然有其可取的一面,但也都有其局限性。那么第三种是交互补偿式,简单来说综合上面两者的优势开展听力教学。
综上所述,我们在进行听力教学的时候,要依据学情和教学内容的不同选取合适的听力教学模式,才能达到良好的教学效果。

The teaching model of listening has gained more and more attention in recent years. There are three models of teaching listening the following:
The first one is the bottom-up approach. It means students understand the material from the sound, words, phrases, sentences and the whole passage. The second one is the top-down approach. It starts with the background information to the main idea and detailed information. Although these two teaching modes have their own advantages, they also have their own limitations. So the last one is an interactive approach. It combines the strengths from the above two in teaching listening.
To sum up, we should choose the appropriate listening teaching model according to the different students and teaching content in order to achieve a good teaching effect.
